Steak and Ale Restaurant History

Steak and Ale opened its first restaurant in 1966 and grew to become a legend in the casual dining restaurant industry. Inspired by the warmth of an English Inn, Steak and Ale was founded upon the principle of providing great steaks at affordable prices and attentive, friendly service within an intimate yet comfortable dining environment.

Created by legendary restaurant leader Norman Brinker, Steak and Ale introduced several innovations to the American dining scene, including the salad bar. Widely considered the early model for casual dining.

Steak and Ale Restaurant History

Steak and Ale is rooted in a rich American tradition — the steakhouse. We stay true to time-honored principles, like chef-driven cuisine, impeccable wines and exceptional hospitality to give you an experience like no other.

Founded in 1966 in Dallas, Texas, Steak and Ale is a beloved steakhouse concept with quality food, a polished atmosphere and accessible pricing. Steak and Ale’s innovation pioneered the casual dining category and introduced the first restaurant salad bar. Bridging the gap between fast food and fine dining, Steak and Ale is a favorite for guests seeking a quality steakhouse experience at affordable prices.

The revival of Steak and Ale has been a labor of love and includes plenty of nostalgia, bringing back all the traditional favorites from the menu but with modern touches, including a prime-rib carving station and tableside service. Most of the signature items such as Kensington Club®, Hawaiian Chicken, salad bar and honey wheat bread, will once again delight guests that have been pining for Steak and Ale.
